The Kentucky Baptist Disaster Relief Lends Helping Hands and Shares Christ in the Process.
According to a Kentucky Baptist Convention press release dated February 19, 2008, just days after spending time in five other Kentucky counties, KBC disaster relief volunteers responded to damage caused by ice storms in Marion. Prior to reporting to Marion, more than 200 trained volunteers reported to areas affected by tornadoes completing 194 projects. KBC's website reports that as of February 25, 2008 teams continue to work in Marion, Kentucky in wake of damaged caused by a string of tornadoes that swept through the region on February 5. They also report that more volunteers are needed. Volunteers must have basic disaster relief training. "Kentucky Baptists are part of a larger network of Southern Baptist volunteers trained to respond to disasters by manning mass feeding operations, using chainsaws to clear downed trees and limbs, clear mud out of flooded homes and more," reported Kristie Randolph, in the February 19 press release. In addition to meeting physical needs, volunteers are always ready to offer help in meeting the spiritual needs of the people they meet. The team members use every opportunity to witness, council or listen to victims and workers. Whatever is required of them, these volunteers do their best to meet the needs and share about Jesus while doing so. Southern Baptist volunteers work with other organizations such as Salvation Army, the American Red Cross, and FEMA. As a whole, Southern Baptist composes the third largest relief organization in the United States. The Bible verse the Kentucky Disaster Relief Organization uses as their theme is Matthew 25: 35-36. "For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited Me in, naked and you clothed Me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to Me." NASB Their logo is a staff of wheat, which represents physical help, a fish that symbolizes spiritual help and the S.B.C., which is their worldwide link, and KY, which is their identity. Opportunity abounds for trained volunteers in Kentucky, in the USA as well as abroad. In addition to the work in Marion KY, volunteers are needed to help with Operation NOAH rebuild, a construction mission's effort in the Orleans East area of New Orleans. Those with a valid passport and would like to volunteer for overseas disaster relief work should contact Kentucky Baptist Convention.
