Christian Web News - On Tuesday night, June 23rd, Richard D. Land, president of the SBC Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, gave an inspiring presentation at the 2009 Southern Baptist Convention.
Land said that we cannot legislate our way to a Godly society. It can only come from hearts changed by Jesus. “The future of America is being determined one person, one family, one church, one community at a time,” he said. Part of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission’s job is to call Southern Baptists to be salt and light to the world, in order to stop decay, rot, to stop the deterioration of sin in people’s lives and to then penetrate the darkness with the light of the Gospel. Having said that, the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission has experienced some great victories in recent months. One of which would never happened had Southern Baptists and others not held the line against the onslaught of opposition. With the support of Christians across the country, President Bush held the line against embryonic stem cell research. Now, scientists who had no other choice but to go back to their labs and search for another solution have found a way to give us the equivalent of embryonic stem cells without killing babies. The technology is called induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS). They are human fat cells that have been treated so that they regress to the embryonic state and can be used just like embryonic stem cells. Even Dr. Oz appeared on Oprah and said that embryonic stem cell research was now obsolete and unnecessary. None of this could have happened had President Bush not drawn a moral line in the sand; and he could not have done that without Southern Baptists and other Christians standing behind him. While Christians have had victories such as these, Land said the reality of the situation is that we are just “treading water.” Land said what we need in America is a reformation. And reformation starts with revival. 2nd Chronicles 7:14 says “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” “Whether America is going to have the future that we want America to have, doesn’t depend on what the lost people do, it depends on what the saved people do,” said Land. When god’s people are revived, the lost people notice and want to know what has changed and the lost start getting saved. This is called an awakening. Then, if the revived people and the lost people who got saved take the scripture and apply it to the evils of society, we will have a reformation.
