Wendy Wright, President of Concerned Women for America (CWA), said, "The arrogance of the California Supreme Court is limited but still holds sway. They had to recognize the right of California citizens to uphold marriage through a constitutional amendment, but refuse to admit they were wrong in imposing same-sex 'marriage' in their previous decision.

"Thank goodness they recognized the rule of law, but they have created future havoc by allowing same-sex couples who participated in commitment ceremonies last year to push their claims to force others to recognize their unions. People with moral and religious beliefs, people who want to protect their children from dealing with issues beyond their maturity, may face discrimination. Californians will have to be vigilant to protect marriage and their religious freedoms and parental rights."

Mario Diaz, Esq., CWA's Policy Director for Legal Issues, said, "This decision is a great victory not only for marriage supporters, but for all freedom-loving Americans. At its core, this decision was about our right to self-govern, and that right ruled the day.

"It is also interesting that this victory should come down on the same day that President Obama names his nominee to be the next Justice of the Supreme Court. The whole marriage debacle in California should always be a reminder of the dangers of judicial activism and the price we will pay if we fail to appoint judges who respect and defend our laws and the Constitution as written."

"We're grateful this court did not overturn the civil rights of all Californians to amend our own constitution," said Brian Brown, executive director of the National Organization for Marriage. "The 7 million Californians who worked hard to protect marriage as the union of husband and wife are breathing easier today."

"Marriage is worth protecting because it is the way we teach the next generation: children need mothers and fathers," said Maggie Gallagher, president of NOM. "This victory for Prop 8 is a victory for children, for civil rights, and for the common good."

Through its California affiliate, the National Organization for Marriage emerged as the single largest donor to Prop 8 in California. The National Organization for Marriage's mission is "protecting marriage and the faith communities that sustain it." NOM is actively working to protect marriage in Maine, New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, and the District of Columbia, as well as California.
