Christian Web News - Despite the warnings of the Archbishop of Canterbury, the BBC has broken with tradition and appointed Aaqil Ahmed, a Muslim, to the head of its religious programming.
Earlier this year in a meeting with the Director General of the BBC, Mark Thompson, Dr. Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury said he was concerned about the idea of appointing a Muslim to the position.
He warned Mr. Thompson about sidelining the Christian audience. Dr Williams and the Archbishop of York, Dr. John Sentamu, have both spoken out in the past about the way Christianity can face indifference and even hostility from the government and other institutions.
Also troubling is last year’s appointment of a Sikh named Tommy Nagra to present Songs of Praise, which is the BBC’s most popular and longest running religious program.
According the Daily Mail, a Church of England spokesman said, “We will judge the new man [Mr. Ahmed] by his output rather than his label.”
Christina Rees, a member of the Archbishops’ Council, said, “Aaqil Ahmed is a respected professional who has an established record of producing programmes on religion and ethics.”
“It is important that the Christian faith continues to receive coverage that accurately reflects its significance in the lives of most people who live in Britain, the overwhelming majority of whom regard themselves as Christian.”
In the past Mr. Ahmed has campaigned for a higher Islamic presence in the media. He is also a trustee of the Runnymede Trust, which promotes multiculturalism.
Christian Web News - Jesus has a way of getting right to the point, doesn't He? There was certainly no mincing of words, He came right out and said, "why are you fearful?" and then went on to say, "O you of little faith." You don't have to read between the lines to see what He was saying, they had little faith.
Christian Web News - Galatians 3:13-14. Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree''), that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
