"Atleast 1,000 Palestinians have now been killed in a 19-day-old Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip. On Wednesday, January 14 is when it reached that number. This includes hundreds of civilians." Hamas-run Health Ministry officials in the enclave said.
The figures, in common with previous counts, are subject to the difficulties of counting and verification in the chaos of the war. No firm casualty toll for Palestinians has been given by the Israeli officials and they say hundreds of militants have been killed by troops.

These numbers included 69 women and 225 children. The health ministry said about 400 women and children were among the dead earlier this week.
More than half Gaza's 1.5 million people are under the age of 18.
Hundreds of Hamas members were killed in air strikes in the first days of the war. Although some argue that many were police officers whose main functions were civilian, Isreal regards all of these militants.
Israel says nine soldiers have been lost in a ground offensive that began on Jan. 3. Four were lost to a "friendly fire". And a 10th soldier along with three Israeli civilians were killed in southern Isreal, in the first week of the war, by Hamas rockets.
Israel says it launched the offensive to halt rocket fire that had already killed 18 people between 2001 and the start of the air campaign. It says it is trying to avoid civilian casualties.
