Newsweek magazine for its cover story next week declares “religious conservatives” have been wrong all along, the Bible supports same-sex marriage.
The issue features a large black Bible with silver cross on the front and a rainbow ribbon bookmarks its pages. The statement was made are you fed up with people lying about the Bible’s contents?? Get the best seller that shines the light on Bible truth, including the sin of homosexuality. “Shocked by the Bible: The Most Astonishing Facts You’ve Never Been Told” and personally autographed by her author. The Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission head, Richard Land told Politico Newsweek’s that this is no shocking eye-opener story. “It doesn’t surprise me,” he said. “Newsweek has been so far in the tank on the homosexual issue, for so long, they need scuba gear and breathing apparatus. I don’t think it’s going to change the minds of anyone who takes biblical teachings seriously.” Newsweek editor Joe Meacham released a note on one of the magazine’s front pages because he expected a backlash from the article. The statement was made that religious conservatives will say that the liberal media are once again seeking to impose their “agenda” on a God-fearing nation. History and demographics are on the side of those who favor inclusion over exclusion so let the emails come. Lisa Miller, senior editor and religious columnist wrote a piece, titled “Our Mutual Joy” and it states, “Opponents of gay marriage often cite Scripture. But what the Bible teaches about love argues for the other side.” Miller to support her claims provides these arguments: Abraham slept wit his servant when he discovered his wife was infertile Jacob fathered children with four different women Abraham, Jacob, David, Solomon and the kings of Judah and Israel were polygamists Jesus was single and “preached an indifference to earthly attachments” The apostle Paul considered marriage to be an option of last resort “for those unable to control their animal lust”
Miller references the examples and also declares, “No sensible modern person wants marriage theirs or anyone else’s to look in its particulars anything like what the Bible describes.” The Bible and Jesus according to Miller never “explicitly define marriage as between a man and a woman.” “Jesus never mentions homosexuality, but he roundly condemns divorce.” Her description of the Bible’s condemnation of homosexuality sex comes from Leviticus, “throwaway lines in a peculiar text given over to codes for living in the ancient Jewish world.” Following the scriptural references, Miller states, “Religious objections to gay marriage are rooted not in the Bible at all, then, but in custom and tradition.” “We cannot look at the Bible as a marriage manual but we can read it for universal truths we struggle toward a more just future.” The Bible according to Miller claims emphasis of “inclusion, even in defiance of social convention, the reaching out to outcasts, the emphasis on togetherness and community over and against chaos, depravity, indifference” these values argue for same-sex marriage. One more thought from the senior editor is King David’s declaration of love for Jonathan I grieve for you, Jonathan my brother; You were very dear to me. Your love for me was wonderful, more wonderful than that of women. Miller said, “What Jonathan and David did nor did not do in privacy is perhaps best left to history and our own imaginations.” According to Miler in a radio interview that was posted on the Newsweek website, all the disputing lies in how people choose to interpret scriptures. “The split is in how you read the Bible”. “Do you read the Bible as the inerrant, handed-down word of God at a certain time? Or do you look at the Bible as living history inspired, perhaps by God, but changeable, open to interpretation?”
