For Christian conservatives, who have watched with dismay as issues they raise have been ignored or trivialized during the long Republican primary, the surprise addition to the GOP ticket of a woman raised in a Pentecostal church, who once described herself as "pro-life as any candidate can be," has transformed an election many had come to regard with indifference.
Now Republicans who describes the Palin selection as a "shot directly into the heart of the evangelical movement" -- hope the party will benefit in November from a crucial part of its base that is as energized as the young supporters of Democrat Barack Obama. Steven W. Mosher, president of the pro-life Population Research Institute, has praised John McCain's surprise vice presidential pick, Alaska governor Sarah Palin.
"Our Alaska friends tell us that she is a serious pro- lifer and that she has been a blessing for Alaska," Steven Mosher said, "and that she will be a blessing as Vice President of the United States."
"Any woman who has five children, while serving in elective office for over a decade obviously has a serious commitment to Life. This is further underlined by her decision to give birth to a Down's Syndrome child despite being advised to abort," said Mosher.
"This pick will ensure that the Life issue receives the attention that it deserves during the remainder of the campaign," Mosher added. "Any woman who hunts moose before breakfast should have no trouble bagging Joe Biden in the debates on issues such as abortion and stem cell research." Wendy Wright, president of Concerned Women for America (CWA), released the following statement in response to Senator John McCain's choice of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate:
"Governor Palin will change the dynamics of the entire presidential race. Her admirable record of confronting corruption and living her pro-life convictions shows she is a doer, not just a talker. Sarah Palin will make history as a vice presidential candidate - and not simply because she's a woman, but because she's a woman of substance and character."
Janice Shaw Crouse, director and senior fellow of CWA's Beverly LaHaye Institute, said,
"It is particularly significant that a conservative woman was nominated for the nation's second highest office. For years the feminist movement has acknowledged for leadership only those women who embrace a radical agenda. How refreshing that now we have a woman who reflects the values of mainstream American women. Sarah Palin is pro-life, pro- marriage and pro-family. She is a woman who is balancing the personal and professional in admirable ways. She is an outstanding woman who will be an excellent role model for the nation's young people. Sarah Palin is chief among equals with American professional women; she brings the kind of balance that characterizes the high-achieving women of today. She will bring to the forefront of our cultural conversations an intelligent, realistic, well-grounded woman's perspective." Of course issues are now being raised on Palin's daughters pregnency and education on sex in schools whether McCain knew any of this or not, beside whether Palin is up to par with being second in command to run the country. Obama did come out saying this was a family issue and is none of our business or use of it in the campaign.
President of the conservative National Clergy Council and Evangelical leader, the Reverend Rob Schenck, who met Sarah Palin when he was a VIP guest at her first appearance with John McCain in Dayton last week said today that her daughter's pregnancy is "none of our business," and commended Barack Obama for saying so.
"This is a private family matter. The Palins, especially their teenage daughter, are entitled to privacy on this matter. Anyone who cares about young people will back off and give this young woman the space she needs. Anyone who exploits her for political or commercial gain is disgraceful."
Mr. Schenck went on to commend Senator Barack Obama for saying families are "off limits" in the presidential campaign:
"Good for Senator Obama. He got it right big time on this one. That was a pro-family position to take. Good for him," Mr. Schenck said. Seeing the up coming debates will show how ready Palin is to be Vice President in a time of stress in our country and the world.
