Vincent and Pauline Matherick, who have fostered 28 children, are having to resign because they refuse to teach their foster children that homosexuality is okay.

Earlier this week, the Mathericks were asked to sign a contract to implement new Sexual Orientation Regulations as part of the Equality Act 2006 which makes discrimination based on sexuality illegal. Under the agreement, they would be required to discuss homosexual relationships with children as young as 11 and tell them that such relationships are just as acceptable as heterosexual ones. They could even be required to take teenagers to gay association meetings. When the couple refused, they were told that they would be taken off register of foster parents. Rather than face the humiliation of expulsion, the Mathericks elected to resign. However, they are planning on taking their case to court with the help of the Lawyer's Christian Fellowship.

Mr Matherick, a 65-year-old retired travel agent and a primary school governor, said: "I simply could not agree to do it because it is against my central beliefs. We have never discriminated against anybody but I cannot preach the benefits of homosexuality when I believe it is against the word of God."

This travesty comes at a time when there is a severe shortage of volunteer foster parents. Despite research showing that moving a child from home to home is detremental to its welfare, some foster children are forced to move up to 3 times a year. In order to rectify the problem, another 8,000 volunteer foster homes would be needed.

The 11 year old boy the couple had been looking after will be placed in a council hostel on Friday.

Religious campaigners say Vincent and Pauline Matherick are the latest victims of an equality drive which puts gay rights above religious beliefs.

If the foster parents were asked to teach the children that homosexuals were still people and should be treated with as much respect as anyone else, there would be no problem. This is what equality means. However, there is a problem when the parents are required to to tell the children that homosexuality is just another lifestyle choice equal to any other. The difference is between promoting equality between people, which we is good, and promoting equality between ideals, which simply makes no sense.

I think you guys are confusing promotion with equality...the law does not require the family to "promote" homosexuality any more than they are required to promote heterosexuality. No child is going to be turned gay because they are told its ok to be whoever or whatever you want to be in life.

Similarly, the state has the right to stop the couple from promoting slavery when their religion allows for such actions.

Seeing how foster care is inherently a government funded and run program it's important to have equality. Fortunately for the tolerant people of America, religious favoritism isn't allowed to encroach upon the Bill of Rights. Homosexuals are law abiding tax paying citizens. Although two individuals are personally against homosexuality, it should not mean that their personal belief system should inhibit a child from being knowledgable upon the subject and culture. It should go double for a foster child who is confused and frightened by the question of their own sexuality.

Since when did tolerance toward an idea mean that we have to promote it?

I think the point here is not to disrespect anyone's religious beliefs, but to avoid imposing trauma on a kid who might be gay. I can't imagine that that these people would really be expected to espouse homosexuality as "beneficial," since being gay pretty much makes one a target for discrimination and alienation.
