Preacher’s Kid Kerry Shook shares his experience of a young boy and now a pastor at the Southern Baptist Convention Pastors Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana Monday June 9th.
Kerry Shook was raised in a preacher’s home and attended the SBC many times with his family. He shared how his dad's job when driving to the convention was to make good time whereas his mother's goal was to make the time good. According to Shook she was good at it while he and his two siblings would be in he backseat enduring the long drive. Shook is pastor of the Fellowship of the Woodlands Church in Woodlands, Texas. As guest speaker at the pastor's conference he shared the question that he and his church family have been answering for over a year and a half now. The question is "What would you do if you had one month to live?" Woodlands Church under the leadership of their pastor started this endeavor with the church staff and then the question spread to all the church family. Shook shared the place it all starts with is: 1. Renewed passion A passion that starts with each person and spreads to each family member and continues as a life ministry. 2. Create a sense of urgency As one ponders each day the question "What would I do if I had one month to live?" Look at all the people around you and become intentional about life connecting with kids and adults in your church. Good intentions are okay but they don't always become intentional. Shook's church created a sense of urgency and we are challenged to live the next 30 days as if its your last then you will live as you were made for. As God intentionally intended in Psalm 190:12 "Make your days count!" Jesus knew before his days on earth ended He only had one month to live and so we as Christians should follow his principles to live passionately and come alive!!! Follow God and take risks!! Shook asked "What about your church?" "What now Pastor?" "What if your church had only one month to live?" A bible study Shook and his wife started in a home where attendance was good the first meeting with fifteen. The next meeting only eight and discouragement started to set in until Shook realized if only one person's life is changed its well worth it. The church continued to share these bible studies in homes and learned the truth its good to be with un-churched people. It is a life changing experience and it can be messy and you will be out of your comfort zone but its worth it. The un-churched don't know they are messed up and need to follow God. Jesus invested His life so love completely. He died on the cross. He loved completely. We need to accept people where they are today right in their mess. Last he shared to learn humbly as he read from Phil. 2 Humility is learned through our pride and pain. Let God give you the courage you need to take risk and to get out of your comfort zone and to love with God's love and power and his wisdom. God uses ordinary people like you and me. Leave a legacy boldly like Jesus did as in Luke 9:51 and stop building sand castles that wash away. The things that will last forever you can't see with the human eye like faith, hope and love. Only one name will not be washed away and that's the name of Jesus Christ. We today are the most privileged people of all time. Remember people will live in heaven for all time because we were willing to take a risk. Fellowship of the Woodlands recently baptized 831 people after they received Jesus Christ as their savior. A video was shown during the conference of this baptizing. We as Southern Baptist have the hope of our calling so lets do all we can to live to bring people into the Kingdom of God.
