Receiving over 52 percent of the 5,856 ballots cast, Dr. Johnny Hunt, pastor of First Baptist Church, Woodstock, GA was elected president of the Southern Baptist Convention meeting in Indianapolis, IN June 10th.
In a press conference following the election, Dr. Hunt suggested that his being elected on the first ballot was a confirmation of God's call on him to lead the S.B.C.
When asked about how outsiders preceive Southern Baptists, Dr. Hunt stated that "Often the press identifies what we are against when actually we've got many good things going on." He posed a question for S.B.C. churches, "How loud are we loving people?"
When confronted about his being identified as someone who would seek to radically change the denomination, Dr. Hunt said his focus was on seeking to turn around the declines in the Convention by helping churches become "a people of the Book (Bible)."
He said that during his time as president he wanted to "see as many people as possible come to Jesus and to follow Jesus."
Christian Web News - Jesus has a way of getting right to the point, doesn't He? There was certainly no mincing of words, He came right out and said, "why are you fearful?" and then went on to say, "O you of little faith." You don't have to read between the lines to see what He was saying, they had little faith.
Christian Web News - Galatians 3:13-14. Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree''), that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
